Joey Votto Childhood & Early Life
Joseph Daniel Votto was born to Joseph and Wendy Votto in Toronto, Ontario. His father was a chef and an avid baseball fan, until his death in 2008 at 52 years of age, while his mother is a high-class restaurant manager and a sommelier.
Votto grew up in Etobicoke and had lots of posters of his baseball idol Ted Williams on the walls of his room.
Votto was 14 when he got enrolled in Richview Collegiate Institute where he played baseball, basketball, and hockey. Towards his graduation, he got selected by the Cincinnati Reds during the 2002 MLB Draft. He started his Minors with the Red’s affiliate Dayton Dragons of the Class A Midwest League where he had great performances throughout the minors until he finally made his debut for the Cincinnati Reds in the MLB in September 2007.

The first four seasons (2007 – 2010) in the MLB, Votto exceeded expectations, his outstanding performances earned him a spot to represent his country in 2009 World Baseball series and had an excellent season with the Reds where he hit 38 doubles, 25 home runs and had a .322 batting average even though he missed 21 games after being placed on the disabled list in June. The 2010 season was splendid when he led the Reds attack to their first division title in 15 years. His outstanding performance that season led to him clinching the AL MVP Award, the 2010 Tip O’Neill Award presented by the Canadian Baseball Hall of fame and the Lou Marsh Award for the best Canadian athlete.
The 2011 season also saw him clinch the Gold Glove Award and a second Tip O’Neill Award and saw his efforts rewarded by the Cincinnati Reds with a 12 year guaranteed contract worth $215 million the longest in major league history. Votto was firing on all cylinders in the 2012 season, having one great game after another with his performances leading the Reds to first place in the central division until he got injured and had to undergo knee surgery on July 16th and was out until early September. The Reds still managed to retain their first position in his absence, and Votto concluded the season with .337/.474/.567 in 111 league games, Landing the Tip O’Neill Award for the 3rd season in a row.
The 2013 season saw him selected for his fourth straight All-Star Game, and he hit .300 batting average for the fifth straight season, leading the NL in walks and .435 OBPs. While launching his foundation to help military veterans and those still in active service cope with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) in Cincinnati and Toronto. While also winning the Tip O’Neill Award for a fourth straight year, becoming the first Canadian to do it. His 2014 season was terrible, he hit a career-low .255 in only 62 games, before being placed on the disabled list for injuries best known to him. This had fans questioning his willingness to play.
The 2015 season showed just how willing Joey Votto was to continue playing in the MLB, where he surpassed some of his numbers in 2014 in April 2015 alone. Despite receiving a couple of one-game suspensions, Votto concluded the season with a .314/.459/.541. He led the National League with 143 walks, and also hit 29 homers, 33 doubles 95 runs and an impressive 80 RBI. This got him in the running for the AL MVP and finished 3rd on the votes. 2016 was another good season for Joey Votto, he led the league in OBP with .434, while also hitting a .326 with 101 runs, 29 homers 108 walks 34 doubles and 97 RBI in 158 games. Despite his performance, the Reds still had a bad season and finished at the bottom of the central league table.
The 2017 season saw Votto’s return to the All-Star Game after a 3-year absence and became one of his best seasons. In August alone, he hit base at least twice in 20 consecutive games, one game short of Ted Williams’s record of 21. He finished the season with very high hits and was in a very close contest for the AL MVP losing to Giancarlo Stanton by just 2 votes. He still won the Lou Marsh Award for the Canadian best athlete of 2017. The 2018 season, on the other hand, was also one to forget, Votto’s start to the season was very poor, and so was the rest of the team, which eventually led to their manager Bryan Price getting sacked. He got injured on August 4th when he was hit by a fastball thrown at a stunning 96mph by Ryan Madison. He was put in the disabled list 10 days later, with Madison escaping any form of punishment whatsoever. He ended the season with .282 batting average 67 RBI, 12 homers 108 walks and still led the NL with a .417 OBP.
